Gum Branch traffic dooms sand mine zoning request.

Sep. 27--A proposal to mine sand from a site along Gum Branch Road was denied Tuesday by the Onslow County zoning board, which determined that the two-lane stretch of road was too dangerous for the increased truck traffic.

The plan, submitted by Morton Minerals, a company owned by businessman Elijah Morton, was defeated by a 3-2 vote on the first question the board needed to answer: would the project harm the public safety?

That was the board's determination -- and the stance of the more than 50 angry residents who came to the county planning office Tuesday to protest the sand mine.
