Child sexual assault occupies a unique place among the various disturbing behaviors American society has chosen to elevate into punishable crimes. Not only is the offense considered possibly the most repugnant of criminal behaviors, but also those who commit it are treated quite differently from other convicted felons. Currently, an increasing number of states allow child molesters to be confined to secure mental institutions after their release from prison.
