If you were fishing with an outboard engine in the cooler climates in the 1980s, you probably remember problems with ice forming in gas lines and engines being difficult to start. The culprit was water in the fuel. Water also caused algae blooms in an outboard's gasoline tanks; in many ways, the decade was a series of engine problems.
Of course, you had the same headaches with your automobile's fuel system, but that wasn't quite as critical because you weren't setting fishing gear out of your trunk.
Since then, fuels have improved, and things have gotten better for the outboard as well as the car engine. But water is once again the subject of discussion ...
