WASHINGTON _ The Senate approved a Congressional Gold Medal for Byron Nelson on Wednesday night, making him the first professional golfer to join an elite list that includes the Wright Brothers and Nelson Mandela.
The move came one day after the 94-year-old golf legend died. The legislation now goes to President Bush, who is expected to sign it.
Earlier in the day, Bush signed into law a gold medal for the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader. In April, Congress approved a medal for the Tuskegee Airmen, the African-American pilots who flew for the Army Air Corps during World War II.
