Jerry Gibson realized his musical aspirations as a youngster in his native Scotland while collecting shrapnel from spent shells to sell for scrap during World War II.
It was then, he said, that he heard the soothing tone of a set of bagpipes from a passing Scottish regiment. The founder of Gibson Bagpipes Inc. of Willoughby, Mr. Gibson has been chasing that sound ever since.
A mechanical engineer by trade, Mr. Gibson, 69, has combined those skills with his passion for piping. What began as a small entrepreneurial pursuit in his garage 20 years ago has turned into a thriving business known to bagpipe aficionados worldwide.
