Pupils who have fewer than six years of mother tongue education are likely to increasingly fall behind up until matric after making the early switch from their home language to an international one, such as English.
So says a Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) report that is based on an international meeting of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA). Africa's education ministers earlier this year met in Gabon to discuss the use of mother tongue education and the findings of the ADEA Unesco Institute for Education study.
