These days almost every homey comfort food has an "updated" version at hip restaurants, and desserts are no exception. For an updated ice-cream sandwich, "Bake and Freeze Chocolate Desserts" author Elinor Klivans replaces the soggy thin cookies in the standard freezer-case version with these chocolate-chip cookies, in which the cookie itself is chocolate, too. There must be no cookie recipe that has as many versions as the chocolate-chip cookie pioneered in the 1930s before the chocolate chip was even invented. That most of the variations are pretty good only reinforces what a fine thing the original is.
