Sep. 28--It's taken five years, but the Roanoke-based Center for Civil War Living History has given away a half-million dollars for the preservation of battlefields and other historic sites.
The center's treasurer, Chris Caveness, announced this week that the center gave out its final grants from a fund donated by media mogul Ted Turner.
Caveness, who runs a Roanoke insurance business, is an avid Civil War re-enactor who helped negotiate the deal with Ted Turner Productions that led to the center's creation.
