"While only a select few can appreciate the discoveries of the geologists or the exact measurements of the topographers, everyone can understand a picture." So stated the New York Times in 1875. According to Joni Louise Kinsey, the nineteenth-century public continued to demand artistic portrayals of new and strange territories long after photographers began to accompany survey parties. Artists not only could portray colors but also could "embody a range of meaning, from the theological and philosophical garden, or the apocalypse, to more general psychological affinities with time and place that had personal or nationalistic implications."
