WASHINGTON -- The question of whether to allow crude exports from Alaska remains in limbo, awaiting word of negotiations between BP Oil Co. and maritime unions.
The negotiations are continuing, according to BP. But the talks may amount to little more than a last-gasp effort to keep the issue from dying, according to others.
BP is applying extra pressure through Maritime Overseas Corp., a shipping company that is losing BP business. BP has been letting contracts run out on Maritime ships that were transporting Alaska North Slope (ANS) crude.
As Maritime lays up ships -- at least four so far, one source said -- unionized workers are losing jobs.
