Life insurance was Scott Hamilton's first purchase after winning a gold medal at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics.

The figure skater didn't want his family to suffer the financial hardships that he experienced when his mother died of cancer when he was 19.

Many Americans, however, aren't doing likewise.
