Nearby, beneath the limestone and sand terraces, a man whose accent owes more to Aberdeen than Avignon is sipping Domaine de Mourchon Seguret Grande Reserve 2004. In the noonday sun, Walter McKinlay is contemplating fruit, life and a growing reputation as the saviour of winemaking in the Cotes du Villages region of Southern Rhone.
His 'nice little red' is being hailed as the finest wine to emerge from France in years and, unlike his contemporaries, he sells every bottle.
