Oct. 1--The thousands of music fans who partied this weekend at the Farm Aid concert in Camden raised as much as $1 million to promote the preservation of family farms. When Farm Aid officials talk about "keeping family farmers on the land," they imply that they are trying to save an endangered species. Yet, the reality is that 95 percent of U.S. farms -- excluding retirement and residential farms -- are owned and operated by families. In recent years, Farm Aid organizers have added a twist to their mission: a vision of family farms producing food for local consumers -- which advocates call the "good food movement."
