Oct. 1--There is nothing for Felipe Alou to do or say now, no argument or excuse to make, no tears, no blathering, no showdown, no regrets.
Absolutely no begging or complaining, either. Always remember this about Alou: There was never any of that.
You don't have to admire the way his team played this season or the way he managed it. But you have to appreciate a proud man trying to exit the scene quietly, and with 71 years of dignity intact.
"I've already said what I'm going to say, which really hasn't been much," Alou said quietly before Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Dodgers. "It is over with."
