Developing heavy-duty diesel engines to meet ever-more stringent emissions regulations is becoming ever-more challenging. More stringent requirements include lower limits on hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, and total particulate emissions.
Along with the stringent emissions levels, the Environmental Protection Agency has introduced "not to exceed" (NTE) emissions limits for both the prescribed test procedures used during compliance certification and over a broad range of environmental conditions where large truck engines actually operate.
