Article: Life and death on the waiting list: states with drug waiting lists for low-income AIDS patients are getting some relief from the Bush administration's new prescription drug program.(HEALTH)

The letter David Woods received from the state of Kentucky in July contained some surprisingly good news. The 52-year-old AIDS patient, who has been HIV-positive for 16 years, was being taken off the waiting list for the Kentucky AIDS Drug Assistance Program (KADAP), which would start to pay for two of the eight medications he needs. And the new Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Plan covers most of the cost of the other six medications. Despite the flat-funding of domestic AIDS programs, Woods may just have to thank the Republican-controlled Congress and the White House--at least in part--for being able to afford his meds.
