Emerald Valley School, a small, private alternative school that followed a democratic model in which students choose their own paths to learning, has closed after six years, a casualty of the state Department of Education's recent reassessment of laws governing such publicly funded programs.
Co-directors and founders Les Ditson and Linda Walling held a meeting at the school Tuesday where students took a formal vote to shut down, Ditson said.
The program, which served about 30 home-schooled students last year in rented space at the old Westmoreland Elementary School in west Eugene, had expected to lose about 80 percent of ...
