Oregon is a two-party state - the Legislature is split between the Republicans and the Democrats, and each party has one member in the U.S. Senate. It hasn't always been that way; in the 1940s and '50s, Oregon was solidly Republican. The Democratic resurgence in Oregon was led by a small group, and Monroe Sweetland, who died last weekend at age 96, was one of them.
