NEW YORK -- General merchandise is playing a growing role at chain drug stores, as the outlets evolve into multipurpose venues that function as dime stores and convenience food stores as well as health care destinations.
"By being a convenient place to buy general merchandise, a drug store can get an extra visit or two out of the customer," says Bob Berman, former merchandising executive at both May's Drug Stores and USA Drug. "And it can be a big contributor to profits."
