Oct. 4--Investors in Penn National Gaming Inc. have hit the jackpot -- with a gain of more than 1,600 percent -- in the 61/2 years since the Dow Jones industrial average last hit a record high. The Wyomissing, Pa., operator of casinos and racetracks turned in the best performance by far of any Philadelphia-area company since Jan. 14, 2000, the last time the Dow put one in the record books. The area's five biggest-gaining companies seem to have little in common -- a gambling company, an edgy clothing chain, an insurer, a computer firm, and a home builder -- except for the smiles they undoubtedly put on the faces of investors.
