THE HAEMORRHAGE WHICH erupted in Kabul on New Year's Day, causing the deaths of 1,000 people, injuries to 9,000, and displacement of over 200,000 in the following five weeks, bodes ill for the the country's future. What is striking about the current bout of violence, as indeed of the earlier rounds since the collapse in April 1992 of Mohammad Najibullah's regime is the lack of ideology at the root of the skirmishes.
