Within a year, altar girls will likely be as commonplace as altar boys in the United States.
After the Vatican announced approval of female altar servers, leaving the choice of having them to each bishop, NCR asked several bishops or their representatives if they plan to institute the practice.
Heads of some of the largest sees in the country and one of the most conservative of U.S. bishops said yes. Others are planning to wait until they consult with colleagues in the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
