Pity the Republic of Haiti. Already the most dirt-poor country in the western hemisphere, it is collapsing into economic and political chaos under the effects of a trade embargo, the demands of a deposed and intransigent president and the reluctance of the current military leadership to give up power.
For most Haitians, the embargo imposed by the international community to restore ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide has become a crippling burden, and negotiations to end it are stalemated.
