A 20-cavity tray, thermoformed from rigid vinyl with anti-static properties, lessens handling time during assembly of connectors used for Cray Research Inc.'s computers. Compared to previous individual packs, the two-piece tray uses less material and can be used at least three times more.
Cray customers never see the tray. Once thermoformed, trays are shipped to a subcontractor that adds paper-thin flex circuit cables. The subcontractor then ships the cable-filled trays to a connector designer/manufacturer where the circuit cable is affixed to a connector block. This final assembly is then sent in the tray to Cray.
