SOME criminals in KwaZulu-Natal sentenced to house arrest and community service or those on parole iare are absconding, with almost half of them not being traceable.
Department of Correctional Service (DCS) spokesman Khazi Sithole said yesterday that 144 offenders had absconded from the correctional supervision programme in KZN last year. Of this number, only 76 were found. The number of people absconding from parole supervision was slightly higher, at 172 in the same period.
The department, however, had success in tracing absconders from parole supervision - 252 were traced, including offenders who had absconded in previous years. 2006 ...
