German Shepherd becomes newest member of NCMC team.

Oct. 5--Lucca whimpered and was somewhat antsy at first. Who can blame him? This was graduation.

But for the remainder of the ceremony Monday afternoon he sat next to his fellow graduate, Kathy Zavakos-Rocha, with perched ears and a stately stare.

"Kathy and Lucca, we're so pleased you are joining our community," said Gene O'Hara of North Colorado Medical Center.

The golden badge shined against Lucca's silky black hair. The black German shepherd traveled from Holland, passport and all, to make up half of NCMC's, as well as Colorado's, first hospital K-9 unit. Zavakos-Rocha, 36, of Johnstown is Lucca's handler.
