Overt prejudice about mental ill health is evident among some health professionals. Explicit chauvinism appears to be based on myth, hearsay and negative reportage in the media, the latter focusing on traumatic events which have highlighted failures of mental health services, eg The Burton Report (sic). (1) There are, however, many positive aspects of mental health care, but these seldom make headlines. Preceptors of nursing students in mental health, through role modeling and education, can identify these positive aspects and help a student to change any preconceived negative ideas about mental disorders and to enjoy their mental health clinical placement.
