There have been several recent books, both scholarly and popular, attempting to explain the shift to the right in American politics. For the most part, the authors of those books fail to get past their own incredulity that anyone might actually be a conservative. They, therefore, resort to relatively simplistic explanations based on the idea that popular conservatism is little more than misplaced self-interest.
