Oct. 6--FERRUM -- With his wheels spinning in the dirt and fans cheering on the sidelines, Tommy Watts twisted his steering wheel, hopped up and down in his seat and leaned left and right in an attempt to gain the fraction of a foot that might win him a bigger trophy.
It worked. Watts' final distance of 119.27 feet beat that of fellow puller Randy Spangler by just 0.18 foot. Watts took first place in the twin stock 1400 class at the Blue Ridge Mountain Garden Tractor Pullers Association's pull in Ferrum on Saturday.
Although Ferrum is about an hour away from the association's base in the Roanoke area, only a year ago ...
