Oct. 6--LA JUNTA - Three of the country's most famous Western explorers passed through the area near the present site of Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site in the 1800s.
Historians say their adventures helped shape the philosophy known as Manifest Destiny - a zealous political attitude popular during the 1840s that put forth the idea that America should expand its borders across the entire continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.
Entwined with the bicentennial of Zebulon Pike's expedition, Bent's Old Fort will host the historic site's first Explorers Encampment this weekend.
