Imagine Mary, the mother of Jesus, being quoted as saying, "I am an impious Jew. I break laws. I transgress. I fail. And I doubt." These are some of the words that come out of the mouth of Gail Sidonie Sobat's Mary, in her novel, The Book of Mary. I draw attention to the fact that this book is called a novel, and so being a novel and not a scholarly work or historical document, gives the author the power to play with fiction.
In the era of the Da Vinci Code, it might be timely that Sobat plays with a new and challenging re-write of the character of Mary. Certainly she has enough ...
