It's a matter of not being out of your depth. Ball-style hones smooth the "peaks" and improve the "valleys." Getting the right finish on the inside of an internal combustion engine cylinder can increase the life of both the cylinders and piston rings. The ball-style hone is a highly-specialized abrasive tool used for this job, plateauing.
Plateauing is a process by which cylinder walls are subjected to bore finishing. The goal of the process is to remove peaks, loose, cut, torn, and folded material from within the cylinder that would otherwise damage rings or seals.
