Beijing was quick to respond to the EU's decision to impose anti-dumping measures on Chinese shoes. The Chinese Ministry of Trade, on 9 October, criticised the decision ratified by the Council on 5 October to impose an additional 16.5% import duty on Chinese shoes entering the EU. Beijing is questioning the legal basis of these measures, which it describes as "short-sighted" and "protectionist" and has threatened to retaliate with similar measures.
