Dusty Baker came in through the plush Stadium Club and went out through the broom-closet "interview room" that's barely big enough for a couple of brooms, let alone the large number of media members who packed it Monday.
What happened was a de facto firing of Baker, as Cubs general manager Jim Hendry opted not to renew the veteran manager's contract.
The fate of Baker's coaching staff remained up in the air, as Hendry planned to meet with each of them Monday or by today. It would be surprising if any were retained.
