The very idea of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike was a challenge for me. I was brought up, as a proper liberal, to believe that a gentle progressive attitude was the best political way. One of the turning points in my thinking occured while I was studying Canadian History at university. I came across a picture of machine gun units on Main Street in Winnipeg. That picture, along with one of club-wielding specials and another of nattily dressed men in cars, sporting guns and stylish white hats, confused me.
