Mike Matthews and his New-York-based Electro-Harmonix company turned the world on to the joys of stomp boxes. From the late '60s through the early '80s, Matthews oversaw the creation of an incredible array of cool-sounding pedals with nutty names like Hogs Foot, Screaming Tree, Clone Theory, Black Finger, and Soul Preacher. His vision of two phasers in every garage band made it possible for almost any pimply-faced fret-demon to irritate the neighbors with the hippest new sounds--at prices even a sprout eatin' communite could afford.
