AT least 50,000 people each year will be denied drugs to treat Alzheimer's that cost just [pounds sterling]2.50 a day after the NHS rationing body yesterday turned down an appeal by campaigners.

Angry sufferers condemned the ban which will affect patients diagnosed with the early stages of the disease.

Instead they will be told to come back when their symptoms have got worse.

Charities, doctors and drug companies had united to appeal against restrictions put forward by the Government's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
