Oct. 11--TORONTO -- It was that triumphal moment for a Hollywood writer, the printer spitting out the final pages of Douglas McGrath's new script. He picked up the phone and dialed a prominent producer to tell him he was sending him a copy of the script he had just finished about Truman Capote. The producer told him there was no need, he already had it.
This struck McGrath as unlikely because he hadn't yet mailed it. The producer began reading from the title page: " 'Capote' by Dan . . .' " When he got to writer Dan Futterman's name, there was what McGrath would later describe as "an uncomfortable silence."
