Oct. 11--The A's needed Barry Zito at his best and brightest Tuesday, and he gave them his worst and most agonizing. They needed big-game charisma, because this was an enormous game and Zito has loads of charisma. They needed playoff fortitude and curveball genius. Really, they needed Zito to be truly Zito at a time when you expected him to be even more. And he was less in the A's 5-1 Game 1 loss to the Detroit Tigers. So much less.
