EATING oily fish during pregnancy could raise the risk of premature birth, scientists warned yesterday.
They said the blame might lie with high mercury levels found in some fish.
And they recommended mothers to-be take fish oil in supplement form only until more was known about the dangers.
The study adds to the confusion surrounding the merits or otherwise of fish oil.
Fish such as herring, trout and sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids which can boost birth weight and are good for the development of the foetal brain.
But they can also contain mercury, a toxic chemical they absorb from streams and oceans, which in some cases ...
