During 1992, the North Carolina Department of Environment, Health, and Natural Resources (NCDEHNR) received reports from the Sampson County Health Department of 18 cases of brucellosis among employees at a local pork processing plant; onsets of illness occurred from November 1991 through September 1992. Clinical features and serologic testing of all patients were consistent with brucellosis, and Brucella suis was isolated from blood samples obtained from 11 persons at the time of acute illness.
