Oct. 12--NEW YORK -- A private airplane owned by a New York Yankees pitcher slammed into an upscale Manhattan residential skyscraper Wednesday afternoon, killing the two people on board and whipsawing the emotions of New Yorkers.
Coming one month after the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the crash initially evoked fear of a new terrorism attack, followed by relief when officials determined it was an accident and then sorrow at the news that one of the victims was Cory Lidle, an enthusiastic amateur pilot who had joined the Yankees pitching staff less than three months ago.
