The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB), the world's largest marketer of wheat and barley, wants farmers to vote on its fate "as soon as possible," the marketing agency's chief executive said this week.
"I feel the best thing to do is move forward with the plebiscite. Let farmers decide and let's move on," CWB chief executive Adrian Measner told Reuters.
The Winnipeg-based wheat board holds the monopoly on Western Canadian wheat and barley, which it sells for 85 000 farmers. Canada's minority Conservative government wants to give grain-belt farmers the option of selling their product where they choose, creating a dual market.
