LIKE MOST POST-COLONIAL authors, Nigeria's best-known women writers neither live nor work in their own country. Flora Nwapa was the outstanding exception. We met on several occasions--the last, sadly, three months before her death, when our interview actually took place while she was in bed and in considerable pain, yet insisting that she wanted to talk. But my favorite memory is our first meeting.
