WASHINGTON _ The search for the elusive political breakthrough on health reform has cast the Democratic party's leading liberal in the role of patient pragmatist.
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., listens stoically _ sometimes with a faint smile _ as Republicans on his Senate Labor Committee trash his health-care proposal. A casserole made from leftovers, one GOP senator calls it. A pasteurized blueprint for socialized medicine, scoffs another.
And then they go and make deals with chairman Kennedy.
