IOWA CITY, Iowa -- In the culmination of a $250,000 process, members of University of Iowa Community CU narrowly voted to change the name of the $500-million credit union to Optiva CU.

Opponents of the name-change, who questioned the need for a new identity after 68 years, were outvoted by just six members, 198 to 192, after a heated discussion. The member vote itself was unusual, as most name changes are decided by boards and management, without member input.

The new name, meant to convey optimism and opportunity, reflects the credit union's recent expansion to a community charter.
