Oct. 17--In the largest corporate acquisition since its founding in 1974, Lake Oswego-based Greenbrier Cos. said it would buy Meridian Rail Holdings Corp., a supplier of wheel maintenance services, for $227.5 million.
The company Monday also announced the formation of a joint venture with Grupo Industrial Monclova to build freight cars in Monclova, Mexico.
Acquisition of the Birmingham, Ala., company highlights efforts of the financially thriving Greenbrier to expand its maintenance and refurbishment business, which is less cyclical and more profitable than new manufacturing.
