The one component of an engine oil filter that determines the overall quality of the filter is the filter medium. The two most important characteristics of the medium are its total surface area for the capture of contaminants and its porosity (measured in microns); porosity is the ability of the medium to remove all harmful particulate matter from the oil. Another feature of a high-quality oil filter is its ability to not dump contamination material through the relief valve and back into the oil galleries.
