Shin Egashira, a Tokyo-born, London-based artist-architect, constructs quirky Duchampian conceptual mechanisms and installations which can literally make us see the world differently. Egashira left the prestigious Tokyo University of Fine Arts to design furniture in New York in the early '80s, then moved on to London to earn a diploma with honors at the radical Architectural Association, where he now teaches.
At Tokyo's Mars Gallery--a two-year-old venture known for its support of interesting emerging Japanese artists--Egashira created a constellation of eccentric interactive works. He covered the floor with steel sheets engraved with the continents, marking 36 ...
