Oct. 18--DECATUR -- The president of the Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County urged the Decatur City Council on Monday not to enact a citywide ban on pit bulls. "Banning pit bull terriers will not end the abuse, the dog biting or irresponsible pet owners," said Irene Peterson, president of the local Humane Society. "These types of pet owners just go further underground, such as in Denver, Colo." Barbara Brooks, a resident who was attacked by a pit bull, urged the Decatur City Council in recent weeks to consider restricting ownership of pit bulls.
